Internet Censorship

The current technological advancement has promoted the sharing of information, skills and ideas across the globe. Many people from all parts of the world are now able to get relevant information on educational opportunities, government news and job vacancies through the internet.  A lot of information is published, accessed and viewed through the internet. Due to a variety of information accessed, there is a moral and security need to limit and control the information that is published, accessed and viewed by people. This essay explores the issue of internet censorship.

Internet censorship is the act of controlling whatever that is published, viewed and accessed through the internet (Zuchora-Walske, 2010). This allows for certain information not to circulate to the public, it is related to the censorship of other offline information materials such as magazines, journals and newspapers. The act of censorship helps in avoiding conversations on critical matters such as security and riots between members of the public.

Internet censorship can be done by the government and private institutions. The government engages in censorship so as to promote moral values of the society, facilitate security and enhance proper religious norms in some countries (Zuchora-Walske, 2010).  Democratic state are normally fair in there censorship since individual liberty is championed in their constitutions. However, some governments go to an extent of suppressing news that their citizens can either publish or view through the internet.

Individual and private organizations on the other hand, suppress the information due to business and moral reasons (Moura, 2013).  However, the issue of internet censorship has not been well achieved. This is because, the internet is a private ownership and individuals can get suppressed information from websites that belong to other countries.

In summary, internet censorship has been one of the commonly practiced issues in many countries of the globe. Private organizations and the government engage in the control of information that members of the public can publish, view and access through the internet due to business, religious and security reasons. Suppressing is normally done through blocking of sites and content filtering in the websites.
